In Memoriam: Jean Merrill

On Thursday, August 2, 2012, Jean Merrill, author of The Pushcart War and The Toothpaste Millionaire among many others, passed away at the age of 89 at her home in Vermont.

Having never read any of her books, I'm not going to attempt a lengthy tribute, but since the announcement of her death, it has become clear that her work--often deeply instilled with humanitarian values and a sense of social justice--has inspired countless readers of many generations with her acute morality.  She has left behind a legacy of work that will no doubt continue to enrich the minds and consciences of young readers and has certainly made its way onto my reading list.

You can read more about Jean Merrill's life and work at The New York Times.
